World Steelpan Day Declared as August 11

The United Nations General Assembly has declared World Steelpan Day as August 11.
The draft resolution was adopted earlier today and will be annually observed on the UN’s Calendar. Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Senator the Honourable Randall Mitchell, delivered a statement at the 77th General Assembly sitting in New York, introducing the resolution.
The draft resolution received co-sponsorship from 84 member states of the General Assembly.
World Steelpan Day will celebrate the musical instrument which originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1930’s and is the only new instrument invented in the 20th century.
